Adhesives by Substrate Type: A Quick Guide for Corrugated, Film, Wood & Metal

“What adhesive is going to be right for my materials?” is one of the most common questions we hear from plant managers and buyers. It usually comes up right after a bond fails. Adhesives don’t bond to “materials” in general. They react to specific substrate surface traits, like porosity, surface energy, and coatings. Think of this as a quick adhesive selection guide. It covers four common substrates: corrugated, film, wood, and metal. For each one, you’ll find the adhesive technologies that tend to work best.
Corrugated and Paperboard: Adhesives by Substrate Type for Case and Carton Work
Corrugated board and paperboard are porous. Glue can soak into the fibers and grip them from the inside. It doesn’t just stick to the top layer. That’s why a few adhesive families work so well here, including hot melt and water-based glues.
- EVA hot melt: the workhorse for general case and carton sealing. Runs at moderate heat and handles standard corrugated with ease.
- Metallocene hot melt: a step up for fast lines or boxes made with recycled fiber. Metallocene hot melts bond many substrates, including corrugated board and wood. They also hold up well as fiber quality shifts from load to load.
- Water-based glue: shows up most in flute lamination and slower case or tray forming. Its longer open time gives operators more room to adjust.
Film and Flexible Packaging: Adhesive Options for Slick, Non-Porous Surfaces
Film substrates like BOPP, PET film, and foil laminates don’t soak up glue the way paper does. They’re smooth, often treated, and rely on surface contact alone. That calls for a different kind of chemistry.
- Solventless polyurethane adhesives: handle film-to-film and film-to-foil laminations.
- Water-based laminating adhesives: a lower-cost option for simpler jobs, with fast cure and less foam.
- Pressure-sensitive adhesives: still the go-to choice for labels applied to film.
Wood: Choosing the Right Adhesive Technology for the Job
Wood acts differently than most packaging substrates. It’s porous like corrugated, but joint strength, moisture, and clamp time matter more here. The right glue depends heavily on the end use.
- PVA wood glue: water-based and works well for interior assembly, edge gluing, and general woodworking.
- PUR glue: a better fit for laminated panels, veneering, edge banding, and jobs facing moisture or the outdoors. PUR bonds well to engineered wood, like MDF and HDF. It also bonds well to solid timber.
- Hot melt: shows up in edge banding and profile wrapping, where fast grab keeps panel lines moving.
Metal: Structural and Labeling Adhesive Options
Clean metal has high surface energy, so glue spreads and grips easily. The real challenge is usually joint strength or surface grime, not basic stick. That shifts the question from “will it stick” to “will it hold.”
- Epoxy adhesives: two-part systems used to permanently bond metal parts, often in place of welds or rivets. Metal bonding epoxies resist chemicals, water, and salt spray.
- Acrylic and MMA adhesives: a faster-curing option that often skips the primer step altogether.
- Hot melt or pressure-sensitive adhesives: handle labels on metal cans, drums, and gear. Temperature swings and surface cleanliness affect how well the label holds.
A Quick-Reference Guide to Adhesives by Substrate Type
Here’s the short version:
- Corrugated: start with EVA or metallocene hot melt for case and carton sealing.
- Film: start with a solventless or water-based laminating adhesive for flexible packaging.
- Wood: start with PVA or PUR for assembly and edge banding.
- Metal: start with an epoxy or acrylic adhesive for structural bonds, or hot melt for labels.
Why a Trial Still Beats a Guess
These starting points work in most cases, but they aren’t hard rules. Coatings, recycled content, line speed, and the season can all shift which adhesive works best. That’s why on-site trials matter so much.
