But an adhesive bond failure is often just a symptom of something else – maybe the substrate, the equipment, or the environment around it. A simple root cause analysis, built around a clear troubleshooting framework for adhesive failures, helps your team find the true cause fast. A failed bond rarely explains itself. Stringing, poor adhesion, cold flow, and delamination can all look alike on the line, but each one usually points to a different fix. Swapping adhesives without checking first often delays the real problem and burns through product and money.
Most manufacturer troubleshooting guides sort an adhesive bond failure by likely cause, not by product. That’s because the same symptom can come from several different sources no matter the product you are using. - Adhesive Factors: The wrong chemistry, an expired lot, or an open or set time that doesn’t fit with your line. - Substrate Factors: Moisture, dust, coatings, or high recycled content can block a good bond. Recycled corrugate often has shorter, more uneven fibers, which can make it harder for hot melt to soak in and grip.
- Equipment Factors: Worn nozzles, clogged filters, uneven tank temperature, or low air pressure. Stringing and dripping nozzles can sometimes point to equipment problems, not adhesive problems, and this is often the cheapest fix on the list.
- Environmental Factors: Cold factory temperatures, humidity swings, or an unheated warehouse. A substrate pulled straight from a cold trailer acts differently than one that’s warmed up to plant temperature.
How to Isolate Variables Before You Call for Support
Try this short sequence before you assume the adhesive is at fault.
- Swap the adhesive lot to rule out a bad batch.
- Check substrate moisture and dust against a known-good sample.
- Check applicator temperature, pressure, and nozzle condition.
- Check ambient humidity and dock or plant temperature at the time of the failure.
Change only one thing at a time. This is the key step. If you change two things at once, a fix can look like it worked when it didn’t. The second change may be doing all the work.
